Saints Expected To Use High Draft Pick On Quarterback

Dec 3, 2014 9:06 AM

The New Orleans Saints are beginning to consider the future of the quarterback position without Drew Brees and could use a high pick on one in this year's draft.

"They believe they can see the finish line here," NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on NFL Gameday Morning. "My expectation from talking to several sources involved in the situation is that the Saints will draft a quarterback highly this year.

"In fact, they wish they had done this in previous years, mainly because, as you mentioned, Drew Brees is 35 years old, he's not as big as Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, and they've seen some arm strength issues that have cropped up in the last several games, throwing crucial interceptions -- the kind which we never see from Drew Brees. They're starting to wonder what is next at this position."

Marshawn Lynch Could Retire In Offseason

Dec 15, 2014 4:18 PM

Marshawn Lynch is contemplating retiring at the end of the current season, according to sources familiar with his thinking.

Lynch faces an uncertain future with the Seattle Seahawks.

Several sources have previously said that Lynch is not expected to be back with the Seahawks next season due to his $5 million salary and the front office's desire to rework the locker room around Russell Wilson.

If Tom Cable gets a head coaching job, Lynch could follow him to that destination due to the strong relationship they've built.

Lynch told two teammates last year that he might retire if the Seahawks were to win the Super Bowl.

Lynch has missed just one game over the past four seasons, but he's battled back pain throughout.

Dec 1, 2014 10:50 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have already been rebuffed in their extension offers to Jim Harbaugh.

Some in the organization, however, remain convinced that Harbaugh could agree upon an extension if the 49ers finish the season 4-0 and make a run in the playoffs.

The 49ers considered trading Harbaugh to the Cleveland Browns last season.

Washington Unlikely To Get More Than Mid-Round Pick For Robert Griffin

Nov 30, 2014 10:54 AM

Robert Griffin III is "highly unlikely" to return to Washington next season, according to the Washington Post.

Daniel Snyder and Bruce Allen have supported Griffin but their blowout loss in Week 11 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was a "watershed moment."

Griffin is set to earn a reasonable $3.27 million in the final year of his rookie contract, with a decision on his 2016 option due by May 3.

Washington could elect to trade Griffin, though several NFL executives told Albert Breer that his trade value is likely at a conditional mid-round pick.

"He's a car that's been driven off the lot; also, the dynamics of his contract drive his price down," one NFC general manager told Breer. "The biggest keys -- QBs go for more than other positions, and his contract is ticking down to the last year, unless a team wants to pick up that option."

An AFC executive added: "On the high end, the team asks for a two and settles for a third or maybe a fourth."

Washington sent three first round picks and a second round pick to the St. Louis Rams in 2012 for Griffin.

The San Francisco 49ers traded Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for a second round pick in 2013 and a conditional pick in 2014 that became a second rounder.

Ray Rice Wins Appeal, Reinstated To NFL

Nov 30, 2014 1:39 PM

Ray Rice has won his appeal of an indefinite suspension and has been reinstated to the NFL.

Rice is now eligible to sign with any NFL team.

"I would like to thank Judge Barbara Jones, the NFL Players Association, my attorneys, agents, advisors, family, friends and fans -- but most importantly, my wife Janay," Rice said in a statement released by the NFLPA on Friday. "I made an inexcusable mistake and accept full responsibility for my actions.

"I am thankful that there was a proper appeals process in place to address this issue. I will continue working hard to improve myself and be the best husband, father and friend, while giving back to my community and helping others to learn from my mistakes."

Charles Woodson Would Like To Play In 2015

Nov 28, 2014 10:55 AM

Charles Woodson would like to keep playing in 2015 if he remains healthy.

"No question," Woodson said Wednesday. "I feel great. Why that is, I have no clue. I'll play this season out and we'll see what happens after that.

Woodson is 38 and has had an excellent season as he's tied for the team lead in tackles and was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

"The funny thing is I never thought about getting to 17 [seasons]," Woodson said. "I'm not thinking about going into the 40s but I don't know. I'm playing well. If we're just comparing to other safeties or DBs in the league, I think I would fare pretty well in that respect. And I'm having fun playing."
